Keynote - Rt Hon Sir Alok Sharma
Alok Sharma was elected as a UK Member of Parliament in 2010, having previously worked in investment banking based out of London, Frankfurt and Stockholm.
Having served in several ministerial roles, he entered the UK Cabinet in July 2019 as Secretary of State for International Development, leading the delivery of the first ever UK-Africa Investment Summit and also set up the International Development Infrastructure Commission which set out recommendations on boosting private capital investment into sustainable infrastructure. In February 2020 he was appointed Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and led the department’s response during the pandemic, as well as the government’s work on a green industrial revolution.
Appointed President Designate of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in 2020 alongside his BEIS role, in 2021 he took on the role full-time serving in the Cabinet until October 2022. He led the work on bringing together the world to tackle climate change, concluding in getting almost 200 countries to sign up to the historic Glasgow Climate Pact.
Alok was knighted in His Majesty King Charles III’s 2023 New Year’s honours list for his services to tackling climate change.
